If you’re in the mood for a great day hike that won’t leave you gassed come Monday morning, you should check out Washington State’s Cathedral Falls. Located near the town of Morton just above Rifle Lake, it’s technically inside Mt. Rainier NM but you’ll never actually see the volcano. Never mind that, because once you see this spectacular waterfall, you’ll forget all about that pesky mountain that blew it’s top in 1980.
First you cross a few creeks and brooks…
…explore a few caves
…keeping your eye out for toads and hummingbirds that also use the trail.
About two miles down the trail, you round a corner – and there it is – the world’s biggest sugar container pouring white powder over a cliff.
What’s really unique about this waterfall, is the trail that winds through the cavern that wraps around behind the falls – allowing hikers a near 360 degree view.
The path is pretty level, with lots of water pouring from every nook and cranny.
It’s not hard to imagine that you’re in an episode of LOST or a character in your latest adventure novel. When you’re standing beside this, the fantasy world becomes reality.
